not reported. not only did he know about it, he directed it, said harback. the pattern? deny, deceive, manipulate. edwards' defense team led by abby lowell says the money never went to edwards or his campaign. it was not a contribution and not illegal. defense lawyer allison van lanningham today told jurors john edwards is a man who committed many sins but no crimes. >> no person not even someone as sophisticated as john edwards could ever know that money from third parties to his mistress was a federal election campaign law violation. >> reporter: the star prosecution witness is former close edwards aide andrew young who managed the million dollar coverup, even claimed he was the father of edwards' child, but the judge today disclosed young improperly contacted other witnesses in this case just two weeks ago. legal experts here agree this

trial that could last about six weeks could boil down to he said/he said. andrew young versus john edwards. i'm steve handelsman, news 4, at federal court in greensboro, north carolina. the weather is making news today. a spring storm out there dumping lots of rain from virginia to maine and in some states, parts of some states, there was snow. this was upstate new york today up to a foot of snow there. it knocked out power. created a mess on the roads as you might expect. this of course typical for february. not so much in mid april. doug kammerer here now taking a look at the nor'easter and how it affected us. doug? >> it affected us in a big way as far as temperatures go. so far the unofficial high temperature 49 degrees. we have only been below 50 for a high three times in the last six years in the month of april so some very cold air. 20 degrees below average right now. we're still seeing shower activity right now across parts of the area. most of this continues to be of the rain variety but out toward the west we are looking at snow.
6:03 pm
this is parts of western maryland into western parts of pennsylvania, parts of pennsylvania 18 inches of snow. parts of western maryland, over 6 inches of snow. how do we know? because that's where we sent chuck bell. we sent chuck on a little voyage today. chuck, all meteorologists would love to be where you are right now. i know i'm here in the studio. i want to be where you are, my friend. >> well, if you need it, it's about a 24-degree wind chill out here, doug. come on out and join me. nice and cold out here in western maryland. current temperature 32 degrees. you know, that's really been a big part of the story. this would have been a lot more snow if 27 or 28 degrees. it would have fluffed it up a little better. for frustrated snow lovers all winter in washington, apparently the answer to finding snow, leave town. for us washingtonians that got totally cheated out of snowfall this winter you really didn't have to drive a long way to see snow. you did have to wait until april to see it but here we are. and this is what we were talking about yesterday in the forecast. because the temperatures are mostly just above the freezing

mark, it's a very heavy, wet snow. it looks like blown concrete on these evergreen trees. and it sticks to the branches a this is the reason we had concerns for a lot of power outages. it doesn't take much to get it all to come off. that is about 5 or 6 inches of very heavy, wet >> the garrett county school start wed a two-hour delay and it wasn't getting any better and roads were heavy so they chose to take the whole day off. >> okay. as far as you know they were planning on being open tomorrow. >> as far as i know yeah. that should be a good possibility would think. >> okay. you hadn't heard of any big road problems or anything like that. >> no, no. >> not a lot of accidents or anything? >> not at all actually. we put the snow emergency plan in early this morning and took it out at 2:00 p.m. >> an unofficial way to measure snow, our trusty tape measure. it is going to work just fine right here by the state highway truck for a quick measurement. 3 inches. >> and of course that's not the best way to measure the snow. the best way is to get out on an
6:05 pm
open grassy surface and take an average of measurements. we showed you how to do that at 5:00. 3 to 6 inches of snow very common out here but i tell you had this been february this would have been a very different story. the 80, 70 and 80-degree weather over the weekend kept road beds very warm and like the state highway guy told you no problems at all on the open highways out here. no accidents, no real problems treating the roads and getting snow cleared out. some of the secondary roads a little bit of a different story where they're shady. really, doug, 6 inches of snow no problem in western maryland. >> no problem. i just love how this is the first time you've had to wear your nbc 4 coat. this entire winter. thanks, chuck. we appreciate it. out there right now temperatures on the cold side. 46 in washington. look at frederick. 41 degrees here. 43 in leesburg. 46 in culpepper. it is going to be a cold night tonight but just how long will the cold air stick around? i have your forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks, doug. new developments in the murder of an alexandria community activist. prince george's county police now say the man charged with killing lenny harris is linked
